Brown's Headlight

Brown's Headlight

By Jennifer Young

In the summer of 2017 I was fortunate to have received an artist's residency in Vinalhaven Maine. Vinalhaven is off of the coast of Rockland and is Maine's largest island. There are many places on the island that are protected by the Vinalhaven Land Trust and the state of Maine. I couldn't go all of the way to Maine without painting at least one lighthouse, so one day I made my way to the north end of the island to Brown's Headlight. This is still a working lighthouse and is privately occupied, but the resident allows visitors on the grounds. I started sketching this piece out on site but it was too windy and the painting a bit too large for me to get too far in the field. I couldn't get it out of my head, though, so I began it anew after I returned to my home studio.
