Island Mystique
By Jennifer Young
In the summer of 2017 I was fortunate to have received an artist's residency in Vinalhaven Maine. Vinalhaven is off of the coast of Rockland and is Maine's largest island. There were days during my residency when I awoke to a beautiful mystical fog that settled upon the island, and it offered a wonderful challenge. The shifting atmospheric effects on the land and the oh so subtle value ranges require astute concentration and alertness in the midst of the peaceful stillness. Not too far from where I was staying sat a lovely field of wildflowers fronting some wetlands. Purple-violet lupines, as beautiful as any hothouse flower, grow wild throughout the region in spring. I painted this scene on site during my residency and completed this larger version in the studio upon my return back home.
